I'm keen to try some of the wonderful food you can get in this area, but of course, I have to be careful about what I choose because of my food intolerances (thanks to fructose malabsorption). There's a fantastic honey factory in the area, but unfortunately for me, I'll have to give that one a miss.
The staff were great at checking what was okay for me on the menu when I explained what ingredients I had to avoid due to having fructose malabsorption. I had one of their gourmet pizzas, the prosciutto, minus the red onion (I can have garlic infused oil, just not garlic pieces, as it's the garlic flesh that contains the fructans that cause problems for people with fructose malabsorption), with the gluten free base.
Olav had the Dijon Chicken (served with two sides of vegetables and chips), and he really enjoyed it.
They do have a vegan, sugar free mint slice for dessert, however, after checking with the staff, I found I couldn't have it as it's sweetened with agave, which is high in fructose. The staff were really friendly and had no issue with discussing food intolerances.
The food was delicious, and the service both fast and friendly. I highly recommend Rubens if you're visiting Hepburn Springs or Daylesford.
